All 47 true pelagic/seabird taxa, grouped by family, against every calendar month. Each cell's color intensity is that species' own abundance in that month, scaled against its own yearly maximum — so a rare species' real peak still shows up clearly, rather than being washed out by species like Wilson's Storm-Petrel that vastly outnumber everything else.

Reading this heatmap

  • Color compares months within one species, not species against species. To compare two species' absolute abundance, read the numbers in their tooltips directly (or use the "Numerically dominant seabirds" chart on the other page, which uses one shared scale).
  • Monthly survey effort is very uneven. September (10 surveys) and October (9) are well sampled; March (5), April (8) and November (6) are moderate; February (3) and December (4) rest on a handful; May and January on just one. A single strong count in a thin month can look like a sharp peak — check the survey count in the tooltip before treating a peak as a reliable seasonal signal.
  • Individual counts are not corrected for double-counting across sequential checklists within one survey day, particularly for ship-following species (shearwaters, storm-petrels, jaegers, terns).
